Forsaken by my oldest friend...

It's 11:15 on a Saturday night and there is nothing on television, leaving me little to do but go to bed. Democracy has failed.

See that girl, watch that scene...

My cousin Amanda and her young daughter Anna are in town for a few days. They're staying to visit for almost a week, but the real reason for their trip from Ontario was a Highland Dance competition that Anna was in today.

Highland dancing is Scottish in origin, and I'm thrilled to see a member of my family celebrating our Scottish heritage, because I sure as hell don't. I celebrate the accomplishments of network television and little else these days. If you're not familiar with Highland dancing, you can checkout the website of it's governing board and I'll refrain from a clumsy attempt to describe it, except to say it's kinda Riverdance-esque, but with more bagpipes and less gay.

As we watched Anna and the other dancers perform, Amanda told me a bit of the history of the dances. I was a bit surprised to find that all these quick, jumpy, arm-wavy dances were originally the domain of Scottish men, and off-limits to the fairer sex. Perhaps it's my male preferences of form, or my woefully outdated gender sensibilities, but I find the idea of burly warriors prancing around their swords before battle while the lithe and delicate women-folk were not permitted in the leg-kicking, heel-clicking fun. The competitors today were 99% women, and as they danced I tried to imagine any man performing the same moves without frosted hair and a penchant for drapes, and just couldn't do it. I wonder how many other gender-role reversals are reflected in the modern world.

While I must admit that watching 10-12 groups of girls perform the same dances over and over again grew swiftly tedious, I was proud of Anna for what is clearly a fine talent, and just generally impressed with the skill demonstrated by all the dancers. Anna was competing in a new category today, and didn't receive any awards, but we did come home to Ruffles, Coke, and The Princess Diaries which - in my mind - is just as good.
