All across the country, Canadian school kids are being asked to grow tomato seeds that have been exposed to a simulated trip to Mars. The launch & re-entry conditions, as well as the atmosphere and ionizing radiation of the Martian surface have been simulated, and now the growth of these seeds will be compared against normal tomato seeds.
An official for the Canadian Space Agency said that this was an important project, and the children involved are of the approximate age to make them likely candidates for eventual Mars settlement. This "TomatoSphere" project, therefore, is actually a "recruitment opportunity".
I'll say at this point that I am not making this up.
So I know how Canadians will make their mark: As tomato growers to the galaxy.
Oh well, we could do worse. After all, the BLT seems to be a national obsession.
